One Day Photography Project - MARGATE

Take three photos that express a sense of Margate as a 'Place'

1) In a 'moment in time'
2) As a texture
3) By incorporating your a4 sheet of paper

I took a load of photos and just have to pick out the three I want to have as my final three. What do you think?

As you can see i took quite a few photos!!

I've narrowed down for 'a moment of time' to these two images:

1

2

I was trying to find something that had been weathered and stood against the age of time but showed it. Everything in Margate was warn down but not to a point that i thought it had been there for any longer then 30 years, which in respects isn't a very long time!

Picture 1 shows the flow of trapped sea water carving its way through the sand trying to find its way back to the sea. I thought this image showed a sort of 'moment in time' in regards to the natural sea tide time which to be honest doesn't really represent Margate as a place.

Picture 2 shows Margate's famous 'Dreamland' theme park which burnt down a couple of years ago. The building has been there for many years and from what I could see was one of the oldest looking buildings along the front. The scaffolding to me represents the process of renewal and that its time for a change.

I really wanted to take a photo of an old couple on a bench wrapped up in their coats and scarfs but no one was about. Margate may have been the 'original sea coast' but it certainly isn't now, its like a ghost town with written notices everywhere telling people that in the near future a revamp is coming. Its so warn down and weathered that it made me feel tired and warn down but it didn't seem to have that one monumental thing that shouted out 'I'm an old town and look at my historical background.......... other then dreamland!'

To show texture I took a number of photos:

I realised how captivated with the textures and patterns in the sand I got. Every time I got to the beach I always do this, there's just something amazing about the way that the water and the sand can adapt by different currents and winds that intrigues me.

To express Margate as a place through texture i'm going to choose this image:

This texture, to me sums up Margate, corroding, weathered, warn down and peeling away. Simply said and with enough explanation I feel!

Incorporating my a4 sheet of paper took me a while. I wanted to show that a man made item wouldn't necessarily look right amongst nature:

The one that is most effective I think is the first image. Everyone knows that Margate is a sea side town and so I wanted to incorporate the man made a4 paper against the natural sea weed.

BUT to sum Margate up in one image i'd choose this one:

Warn down, ripped up, slapped on/over and weathered

I did however find something hidden away which made me smile and made me think that even though things were falling apart and not looking attractive and graffitied on there was a certain person out there who wanted to share something that i found was a beautiful thing:

'My mind seeks depths unseen, and treasures unsought'

A beautiful reminder that although something may appear ugly it may actually be secretly beautiful.
